Meta’s Biggest AI Bet Yet: $10B for Scale AI

Meta is reportedly preparing to make a landmark investment exceeding $10 billion in Scale AI, a data infrastructure company known for powering some of the world’s most advanced artificial intelligence systems.
If finalized, this would be Meta’s largest external investment in the AI space. Scale AI, headquartered in San Francisco, specializes in labeling and structuring massive datasets that are essential for training large language models (LLMs).
Meta Plans Major Stake in Scale AI, Sources Say
The company has already established partnerships with key industry players, including OpenAI, Microsoft, Nvidia, and Meta itself.
According to insiders, the potential deal could take the form of a tender offer, allowing Meta to purchase existing shares at a valuation that could push Scale AI’s worth to nearly $25 billion a significant jump from its previous $14 billion valuation in 2024.
This investment aligns with Meta’s long-term vision to expand its AI capabilities beyond internal development.
The company is already planning to allocate over $60 billion in capital expenditures in 2025, much of which is directed at AI research, model training, and infrastructure.
In fact, Meta and Scale AI are already collaborating on a project dubbed Defense LLaMA, a defense oriented version of Meta’s LLaMA large language model, in partnership with U.S. defense technology firm Anduril and the Department of Defense.
Sources close to the matter suggest that Meta’s push for deeper collaboration with Scale AI reflects a strategic pivot one that echoes moves by rivals like Microsoft (with OpenAI) and Amazon (with Anthropic), where long term control over both data and model development is seen as a competitive edge. Neither Meta nor Scale AI has officially commented on the investment talks.
