Google.org Launches $15 Million AI Fund to Empower Underserved Communities in Asia-Pacific

Google.org, the philanthropic arm of Google, has announced a major $15 million initiative called the AI Opportunity Fund: Asia-Pacific, aimed at equipping underserved communities across the region with essential artificial intelligence (AI) skills.

The program is being launched in partnership with the Asian Venture Philanthropy Network (AVPN) and the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

Over the next three years, the fund will support nonprofits, social enterprises, and workforce-focused organizations by providing financial grants, tailored mentorship, and access to AI training resources developed by Google.

The goal is to ensure that vulnerable populations are not left behind as AI continues to reshape the global job market. “AI brings enormous potential for growth in Asia-Pacific, but it’s vital that the benefits are shared equitably,” said Scott Beaumont, President of Google Asia-Pacific.

“Through this new fund, we’re helping people from all walks of life build the skills they need to thrive in an AI-driven future.”

Recent studies indicate that 93% of employers in the region plan to adopt AI tools within five years, with skilled workers in AI fields earning up to 44% more.

However, digital inequality remains a challenge about one-third of the region’s population still lacks internet access, and informal employment is widespread.

AVPN CEO Naina Batra emphasized the need for inclusive digital growth: “With 165 million new working-age individuals expected in Asia by 2030, preparing the workforce for an AI-powered economy is not just an opportunity it’s a necessity.”

This new initiative adds to Google.org’s ongoing efforts to promote digital inclusion in the region. In 2024, Google.org also committed $5 million to the ASEAN Foundation to deliver AI training to over 5.5 million people in Southeast Asia.
